Let's Talk Lichen Sclerosus
Homeopathy: An Alternative Treatment that Provides Relief!

What is Lichen Sclerosus (LS)?
Lichen Sclerosus is a skin condition that can affect the vulva and sometimes anal area. It is a condition that presents externally (not inside the vagina or anus) and can present with intense, distressing itching (often worse at night), soreness and irritation or any combination thereof. It is sometimes asymptomatic. The skin of the vulva and/or anus often shows pearly white spots which can join together and the skin can become fragile over time. This leads to rawness, inflammation and possible splitting or cracking making sex or passing stool painful. The progression of LS can be slow and diagnosis sometimes can take years to occur. Often times it is mistaken for thrush until it is examined by a medical professional whereby a skin biopsy can be taken to get a diagnosis.
Causes
There is no known cause for LS but some say it is an autoimmune disease. There is a low correlation between other autoimmune disease and the presentation of LS.
Treatment
The most typical treatment is topical steroid cream or ointment which is anti-inflammatory. Steroid creams are prescribed by a medical doctor and a regimen is prescribed to bring symptoms under control. Often long-term use is required with less frequency based on symptoms. The downside of this treatment is that it can thin the vulval skin making it fragile.
Natural Treatment Options
Dietary recommendations include avoiding gluten and supplemental use of Omega 3s and Vitamin D.
Application of natural oils such as Tallow or Coconut oil is moisturizing and soothing.
Homeopathic treatment of lichen sclerosus has proven effective in management of symptoms. A homeopathic practitioner can help select a remedy that is specific to your symptoms but also supportive of your overall immune and emotional health which can help reduce symptoms in the long-term. One homeopathic medicine that might be of help is Caladium which has itching and burning of the vagina and vulval area. There is also very dry skin in the vaginal area.
