A More Natural Approach to Infections
Antibiotics and the impact on the immune system of the next generation

It won't be a surprise to many of you reading this that antibiotics cause detrimental health issues to the person taking them. But what is interesting is that a recent study done in zebrafish found that antibiotic use can do the same in their offspring.
And given that we are constantly exposed to antibiotics in our water - in fact, antibiotics are considered "pseudo persistent water pollution" one can only imagine the impact that would create in future generations with frequent, regular exposure to these drugs.
"More specifically, the study shows that the first generation of zebrafish, born to CTC-exposed parents, had weakened antibacterial defenses and that the number of their immune cells decreased. The latter also applied to the third generation. When an organism’s immune system is weakened, the organism becomes less able to fight viruses and bacteria and thus more prone to diseases.
Previous research has also shown that males among so-called false scorpions (Cordylochernes scorpioides) have poorer sperm quality when their fathers have been exposed to the antibiotic tetracycline: the number of viable sperm cells fell by 25 percent."
So, understanding that antibiotics cause immune system weakness decrease the ability to fight off viruses and bacteria AND have the potential to impact male fertility in future generations, it begs the question as to why we continue to ignore some of the wonderful natural antibiotics of the past (and present!).
Obviously, money is one.
But I think maybe it has to do with an unwillingness to empower moms, dads, everyday people to take control of their health.
We have put our health into the hands of 'experts' and have forgotten how to trust our own instincts when it comes to what is actually good for us.
My thoughts? Let's re-open the discussion around our personal health and take back our power. We can become informed citizens, informed parents, informed children, informed friends and make good health decisions for ourselves and loved ones. We have access to so much information and when we start paying attention to our bodies and listen to our intuition you'd be surprised at how accurate you are.
Some of my favourite natural approaches to infection?
1. Simple soap and water.
2. Warm salt water rinses.
3. Essential oils such as lavender, tea tree, peppermint, clove, lemongrass, oregano. (Make sure you do your research before using as some are unsafe for children/infants - and they are extremely potent and often require dilution!)
4. Homeopathic medicines such as hepar sulph, silica, belladonna, calendula, antimonium tart...to name a few of hundreds!
Homeopathy is safe for infants, children, the elderly - doesn't interfere with medications - and is completely natural. I keep my Helios 36 remedy kit on hand ALL the time and take it mostly everywhere with me! You can buy it here.
I'm not saying there isn't a time and place for antibiotics - but start empowering yourself today. You'll be doing yourself and everyone around you (including future generations) a huge favour! :)
In health,
Rachel
